Seeing with God's help
Psalm 36:9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.
There are ways of looking at things. We look look at things with our eyes, we look at things with our hearts, we look at things with our 'gut'.
I can choose to look almost tirelessly for the faults and shortcomings of others with the precision and magnification of a jewelers lens, expectantly or cautiously looking for a flaw, a defect. I could. People do. I have spent so many hours meticulously looking at every mistake or every nuance of quesionable judgement in others that I just haven't had the time - even with the naked eye - to look at my own. Yet somehow, that is not looking in God's light; it is, rather, in Go's light obscured by own own shadow.
I can also choose to look for good, for charm, for wit, for humor, for honesty, for loyalty and true friendship. I can temper my critical eye with, if nothing else, the benefit of the doubt.
How much more beautiful people appear when we choose to love them.... an adaptation of a quote I read recently. (and if anyone knows the source, please add it as a comment to this entry! Thanks!!)
If I bathe myself in the light of God.... I will see light. The light is there - it is ours for the seeing.... all we need do is first open our hearts then open our eyes!
