The Other Apostle
Mary Magdalene was just that ... another Apostle. Paul claims the title without having learned at the Master's feet. Surely Mary is the first Evangelist, bringing the Good News of the risen Christ to the skeptical mix of disciples and Apostles still holed up in the Upper Room that had served as the site of the first Eucharist.
Remember Mary today - misunderstood from the pulpits and pens of the early Church 'Fathers' through the centuries. She followed Jesus, recognized him through the tone of his voice in the Garden that first Easter morning.
July 22 is Mary's Feast Day. Though details of her contributions to the spread of the Gospel were squelched by the patriarchs, Mary undoubtedly carried Christ's message of hope, compassion and love as far as her feet could take her. Here's to Mary: Disciple, Apostle, Evangelist.
