A Prayer for Level Heads

O God of Peace, Judgment is yours alone. Let us remember that killing anyone is something to be taken seriously, as is bringing to justice those who have committed crimes and atrocities. Help us to recall that our enemies were elated after learning that the attacks they planned had been successful. Their displays of joy were cruel to us in our anger and grief; the tables now have turned, and we have killed the one who instigated and planned those attacks. Help us, O Lord, to avoid gloating or goading. Even our enemies leave behind grieving families and friends; now these diminished survivors must choose how to go forward in their lives. Keep us from renewed malice toward those who wish to harm us. Protect us in our vigilance, but keep watch that we may not stray into boasting or insult. Revenge is insatiable; keep us from its temptation. Let this war fade; let our conscience remain clear. Take our hand, Precious Lord, and lead us into the way of peace.   Amen.
